“The worst part about drowning isn’t the water, it’s thinking that no one is there to help you.
Our life was what you could call in order for success. We both had good jobs providing us with a lifestyle that was full of pleasure. My wife and I decided to move from California to Arizona and start preparing ourselves for retirement. Since our home in California had so much equity and our credit was A+, it was easy to borrow money to purchase our home in Arizona. The home in California would quickly sell, giving us not only enough money to finish the purchase of our retirement home, but also put money in the bank for us to start the next phase and that was to get everything ready for that time all look forward to.
Life is 5% action (that is what happens to you) and 95% reaction (how you handle what happens).
Since the sale of our home in California was going to provide us with so much profit, the fact that my job transfer to Arizona reduced our income by 1/3 was no worry. The fact that our credit was A+ was also a huge security net for our retirement years. Then it happened, the real estate market turned upside down and our home was not selling. Not only were we dropping the price greatly, we were using up our credit trying to keep two boats afloat, mortgages in both California and Arizona. Overnight, our life of pleasure turned to one of drowning in debt. We were facing foreclosure on our California home, which did happen. We also ended up filing bankruptcy on the huge amount of debt acquired from reduced income and homes in both California and Arizona. Since profits from the sale of our home to help with our home purchase was no longer in the picture, the possibility of our Arizona home going under was something we were now being faced with. Emotions were high between my wife and myself. Fear, lost, hurt, angry to mention a few entered almost all our conversations between us. Then that helping hand came out, the chance to react to what was happening to us presented itself: I met Mike Fish.
I remember coming home that day thinking, yes, there is light at the end of the tunnel. I remember telling my wife that I had met someone that was going to help put together a plan of recovery. Our first meeting with Mike was refreshing for both of us. After fully explaining our financial tailspin, Mike simply said, and I quote, ‘You guys need to take some time off.’ Around the table that day we decided to call it, ‘Getting our happy back.’ We came up with a plan; 7 day, 30 day, 6 month, 2 year and 5 year goals were written down in the ‘notebook’. With Mike’s help, we sold our home for full price along with the furniture. We purchased an RV and loaded it up to begin our journey. The main emotions in conversation between my wife and myself were now hope and excitement. Mike helped us with a budget and source of income that gave us a chance to catch our breath and once again, relax with life. We were once again taking control of our lives and not letting our situation control us.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.
Now, about a year later, my wife and I can truly say we are once again enjoying our daily gift. We are way ahead our schedule for financial recovery and excited about our future and those golden years called retirement. Conversations with Mike aren’t as frequent as they once were, but still just as important.
